The Foundation Stage of a child’s learning and education extends from birth to the end of the reception year at school. The early stages in a child’s learning and development need to be based on play (active learning), and in making their own discoveries through play. During this time in their early education, children need to be supported and guided by adults who understand their individual needs, and who will provide the right kinds of activities and experiences to enable them to learn and develop.
A balance also needs to be achieved between free play and directed play. At The Mulberry Bush Day Nurseries, we feel that we have achieved a good balance, so that children learn through a combination of spontaneous and planned activities.
The Early Years Foundation Stage is underpinned by 4 themes:
A Unique Child
Positive Relationships
Enabling Environments
Learning and Development
These 4 themes are incorporated into our planning for the 6 areas of development,
which are:
• Personal, Social & Emotional Development
• Communication, Language & Literacy
• Problem Solving, Reasoning & Numeracy
• Knowledge & Understanding of the World
• Physical Development
• Creative Development
The curriculum planning for each age group can be seen in each of the nursery units
and in our pre-school playgroup.
